List of DotA Hero Classification

Goal: Super handy to find a fitting hero or one that matches your interests, but also for boosting your general DotA knowledge. So this section is to explain to people what class or role each hero is/plays within DotA. A lot of the heroes are good at several things and not just one - I will try and give a little run down of what they are good at. Remember with the right items and tactics, every hero can do every thing, just not as good as others. Below is the dota hero classification table with all the heroes, you can sort and filter on the different attributes. Just like DotA this is build by community support, so if you see anything lacking, incorrect or just like to thank us, please tell us what and why in the comments below.

Hero types or classes:

Attribute: (A) Agility, (I) Intelligence or (S) Strength (sometimes miss spelled as strenght).
Attack Type: (R) Ranged or (M) Melee.
Disabler: Heroes who possess the ability to disable other characters, basically forcing them into a disadvantage while they attempt to fight or flee. Disables include any spells that move the enemy without his or her consent, slow, disallow movement, reduce damage, reduce attack speed, reduce armor, prevent physical attack or prevent spell casting. The general disable spell, is a spell that can extend and enemy's presence in combat against his or her will. AoE disabler: A hero with skills that allow him/her to disable a number of heroes with a given skill. Silencers: They have skills that silence target heroes, making them unable to cast spells. Slower: A hero that is able to slow down the movement speed of an opposing hero.
DPS (Damage Per Second): These heroes are also known as carry heroes, because later in the game they deal much damage to heroes either with a high rate of attacks or just massive damage for each attack compared to other heroes. These are also sometimes described as late gamer, because these heroes will eventually or some even from the start are able to farm well, get loads of gold and with a decent lvl are just FREAKS, that are known for godlike killing sprees, killers that are freaking hard to kill as well. Sounds intimidating? It is, if you do not take counter measures.
Ganker: Heroes which specialize at killing other heroes through physical damage or otherwise when able to enter undetected, either solo or in a ganking team. Most heroes that have windwalk, an invisibility skill, or blink can fall into this category. Often these heroes need to get more gold than other classes. Hunters: They are heroes who regularly hunt down heroes wherever they are and kill them. On most heroes who are hunters, their use diminishes late game where their combo is pretty much survivable. Chasers: Heroes that are able to chase down fleeing heroes with ease compared to other heroes.
Healer: The healer can sometimes heal others but may only be able to heal himself. Lifestealers, regeneration or healing skills refill hp easily.
Initiator: Also known as play setter. A hero who's skill or often its ultimate is able to stun/disable a large area and a number of heroes, or in some cases deal massive damage to a group of heroes. In this window of time your team that is ver ynear and in a good position starts spamming spells and deal as much damage as they possible can till the time lasts.
Jungler: Every hero can kill neutral creeps or jungle but some heroes can do so much more effectively or from a very early stage, these are referred to as junglers.
Nuker: Heroes which possess the ability to cause an significant amount of damage in a single instant via use of an activated spell in lieu of a physical attack. A hero who uses skills that deal some good instant damage. These heroes often spam these spells in a confrontation, especially when these spells have a low cooldown time and are known as Spammers. AoE Nuker: A nuker who's nuke can target more than 1 hero. AoE damaging ulti: A hero who's ulti is a nuke or is able to deal damage. It may either be channeling or non-channeling.
Pusher: Heroes which can quickly destroy enemy towers and creep generators due to their ability to summon additional units or deal damage to an area of enemy creeps. Pushers could be counted as support, although sometimes they can be used individually instead of working together with the team. Basically any hero who is/are able to push a lane (or 2) very quickly compared to other heroes. Army maker: Heroes that are able to get to build up an army. The army usually consist of the hero's summon added by Dominated creeps and Necro warriors.
Stunner: Heroes who posses the ability to bash or stun other characters. Kinda like disablers but it makes the enemy a bit weaker while also being disabled. Some heroes can are AoE stunners, stunning a number of heroes at once. Certain heroes have passive skills enabling their attacks to have a chance of bashing or stunning. With enough attack speed (or luck) sometimes a hero is able to bash an opposing hero continuously. Usually locking the targeted hero in his or her place, when the enemy is constantly stunned it is known informally as permastun, permabash or stunlock.
Support: Heroes whose skills are meant to directly aid the rest of the team. Heroes that can use healing or protective skills on allies fall into this category. Heroes that are able to; buff, heal or contribute in killing a hero by boosting allied heroes or units.
Survivor: A hero that can remain in a lane for a long time sometimes versus multiple opponents. Often with an escaping mechanism or good healing options. Image maker: A hero that is able to make images of himself and make the real hero invisible, it's easy to do more damage but also to survive this way.
Tank: Heroes who can absorb huge amounts of damage with either high health or armor count. Typically used to tank towers or enemies. A tank is a hero who is supposed to and able to take loads of damage for the team in order for the other heroes to take less damage. Usually they are the heroes in the front line. Tanks are perhaps the best initiators.
